BMW Coding vs Programming: What's the Difference?

These two terms get used interchangeably a lot, but on a BMW they actually describe two different processes.
Coding: adjusting what's already there
Coding changes the settings within a control module's existing software — enabling a feature that's present but disabled, adjusting how something behaves, or personalizing options. Think of it as changing the module's configuration rather than the module's actual software.
Programming: updating the software itself
Programming (sometimes called flashing) replaces or updates the actual firmware running on a control module. This is what's used for manufacturer software updates, fixing known software bugs, or updating a module after a repair — and it typically requires factory-level tools to do correctly.
Why the distinction matters
Using the wrong process — or using aftermarket tools not built for it — can leave a module in an inconsistent state. Proper equipment and the correct sequence matter for both, which is part of why this kind of work benefits from being done with factory-level software rather than generic tools.
